This is something I have been wanting to do for a while now. This is my proposal for a thread to post visual art (rather than members start random threads over works they have done, that people rarely pay attention to anyways.)

So if you have a drawing, sculpture, photo, sound bite, or other (anything other than video. that should be posted in the film section of the forum) show us here.

My first post is this cartoon of myself, I did for my cartooning class.

Nelson, those photos are great, heck, all these photos are great.
Ahhh, yet another reminder of how much I suck and how inspired I am to improve.

The earth shot is gonna be completely redon using blender, so thats a rough first draft freeze frame, she's kinda wack. I built the 4 year olds mandalorian costume, and built the studio scale space shuttle and MLP.
All are from my live action lego movie Luna, except for the star wars thingy.

nelson

UHm...isn't that (the shuttle) a screen-cap of the behind the scenes of "Armageddon?"

elemental fantasy
09-18-2007, 04:25 PM
If that was not sarcasm nelson, it was one of the greatest compliments of my life, lol.

No, I built her a couple years ago. The shuttle is a $40 model, everything else was mad from scratch. the srbs are pvc pipe and the EFT is a few 2 liter bottles of soda.

I dont think my crew members had a freakin clue as to what I was doing that day. Come to think of it, most my crew members still dont lol.

elemental fantasy
09-18-2007, 05:36 PM
Yeah, the movie is about 30-40 minutes in length. She will be out some time next year. Here is the only fully completed shot, screen grab, just a 2 second intro to one of the characters. But thousands of compositional shots are going into this thing, it will take a while, and I am still learning the 3d software for blender for a planet effect that comes VERY close to what you see in Armageddon and TF.

The website is under construction I will update the website within a few weeks.

I'll go away now : )

R-type, that car stuff totally counts. I took a year of collision repair in hopes of having a costume auto shop with my friend. but those plains feel through so now, I am in sequential. but really hope to get back to the car stuff later in life, when I have more money. but, anyways. that's is a pretty car you got.

Well, I pretty much already think that writing is an art form too in a way and is what I do but what do you think ?

Every picture or painting is art or not to the eye of the beholder so writing could be too to a certain extent.

Thanks guys, that means a lot but it's in it's very early infancy to say the least.

I'm waiting until I buy a new work desk and a new comfortable chair and then a new computer system but I hope to have all that up and running by January then I will start writing it on my new system.

I have the rough idea in my head of course and I might write some things out on old fashioned paper too.

It's based on a dream, literally, and in fact it was my first color dream.

Sorry guys, last time I post picks in here for a while, I promise, I'm sure your gettin tired of it.

These are stills from yet, another lego movie, called "LG-1 Racer world grand prix."

No idea when it will be out as she is a pet project and It is still in pre-production.

There early concept stills of the movie, the actual movie is a bit more breathtaking. There are actually 26 free moving lil lego cars that rip through manhatin new york at night time, moscow in the snow, and sydney austrailia.. Ok, thats it, I have sooooo much stuff from drawings to freeze frames from a tone of projects, but this will be it for a while........rapidly scampers away.......

If all goes great, it wont be available for the internet till late 2009 as a result of major festival release policy. I want Teluride!!!

Luna will be on HRAY baby. lol

No, It will most likely be out next summer, But if my dreams come true and she turns out the way I see her in my head, she will make 1 major international festival next year.

I wanted to release her this year, she just got so gosh darn huge, I dont wanna kill her by rushing her. So I am gonna take my time and do it right.

Also, there are no rules about sending the film out to friends and family, just hosting on other sites and festivals, so when she is completed and anybody may wanna see it, I will make it possible for them to see her without breaking terms and agrements with the major festivals.

But all in all, summer 2008.

Here is a still of a test I am doing for my HP based wand dual film, just an fx test, which sucks. The HP wand dual will be out 2007 dec. 24th to meet the festival deadlines. Heres the vid link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc_Stl9gUcA

Thanks guys but I didn't make that sun. It's not hard to make a sun. I had one made and colored but I stopped. It was late last night and I was pumped full of medicine and had to get my stuff ready to send to SCAD, so I just grabbed a hi-res image off the net and manipulated it into the works. I'm not to happy with this anyway. Everything else is scratch made though.

My new one will be the sun I'm working on engulfing a planet with a solar flare. I want it to be a high detailed image, something you can hang on the wall. A really nice image that people just look at and go "wow..."

That sucks, I've been back to work now after my knee surgery for less than a month and feel the creeping crud of some super bug starting in my system already, not anything serious but not pleasant for sure.

It's been going around here before I got back and I work in a hospital operating room where we get all sorts of wonderful bugs.

I felt like a caged animal after taking robitussin for a few days a few years ago, I was in a movie theater and still felt like I was in a tiny cage and felt very nervous. I've never had that happen before using that stuff though and stopped taking it right away after that.

The Nightwing symbol is my own design. Its the bat symbol polarized to rectangle if I can remember correctly. It looks 100x better in original form at small poster size. I'd love to have it printed and framed but thats $$$ because of all the black.

You're right Uraydo; a blockbuster movie, no way. An animated dvd or comic, maybe.

More of the story has to do with Bane, Scarecrow, and Joker. I just haven't figured it out yet.

The sketch is coming out nicely. However, I'm a little confused as to why you chose Greek architecture for the background? The neo-cowboys and the Minotaur don't seem to clash with the background, but the bike does. While you did a realy nice job with the Tomahawk, it looks very out of place.

Now, I don't know what the parameters of the project are, and whether it's exactly what you are supposed to be going for. Action saddled in between something old and something new perhaps? Otherwise the background (building facade) and the foreground (the bike itself) don't seem to go well together.

there are a few perimeters I could have followed, but the ones I chose where 2 or more rodeo clowns in New York City, with a Motorcycle. All three elements that are chosen must contribute to the story, they can't be just thrown in.

Yet another backgrounds and props assignment. this we need to show someone walking to our dream car. (or car of interest.) I chose the legendary Dodge Powerwagon. I had trouble getting consistant reference so proportion is a little questionable at times. also all the images I had with human scale were relatively shorter than the man one I was emulating. As always I feel I could do with some more clarity, even if they are just pencils. The wheels in the last panel are a little off, but I personly liked the look of it so I didn't bother to correct it (even if it really isn't right).

feel free to dig into this one, as it seems I have been going around spewing venom today.

Oh no, not more Urry bs. :D (j/k)

Other than the Power Wagon needing to be bigger (I don't feel its massive scale is showing here), and the scale of the cabin (2nd row), this looks pretty good. I can tell what is going on from one panel to the next pretty clearly.

I agree with the size thing. again all the pictures that I had with people in them, the trucks were at there minimum hight. to tell you the truth, I was at a lose to what to do. Live and learn I guess.

Ury, have you ever thought of asking for or applying at companies for story boarding. I know many direectors don't use them, but if it's good it just might inspire something. Or like Mcquarie (sp) it could be used to inspire an entire concept.

actually, I would love to be able to storyboard. I haven't really thought about how to go about getting a job in that field, but it is definitely on the list of jobs I would like to have.

Did you color correct that orange? Or was it that deep?

Sidenote: Can I tone map images that way with consumer digital cameras? Photoshop?

ScarCrow28
03-09-2008, 04:51 PM
Yea that color was pretty much that rich & metallic. It has been sweetened a bit to really grab the highlights and shadows in the tone of the paint job.

And yes, you could do the same thing with your own camera. What it takes is bracketing when you shoot it. Which is basically taking multiple photos of the same exact shot but at different exposures to grab the widest dynamic range possible from the deep shadows and the bright highlights.

Then using Photoshop CS3 (not sure if CS2 has these tools or not) you combine the different exposures into an HDR photo. Its a bit more complicated then that. but best way to learn is to search HDR photography. there are plenty of sites that show you how.

There are also programs out there that will do the same specific thing if you don't Photoshop.

I'm not sure the extreme dutch angles are working.

Usually when I take a shot using a dutch angle, I also take a straight shot, because I hardly ever like the way the dutch angle looks.

Remember that dutch angles (tilted horizon lines) show psychological uneasiness and/or tension.

still, you have some great shots here. That tension I talked about, really works well for the flower field and the sunset.

It's my first try using dutch angles, more or less a "shot and see what happend" collection. In usual conditions i i would have shot some of them with normal angles.

My art is insperation and all but the pencil sketch were done as a request for a friend. I'm proud because they are the first transformers i ever done, and the very first time I used paint as a medium. So whether or not you consider it artist study or not i don't care. They were done for pleasure of doing and challenging myself to see if i could do it. Here is another one that i think is better than the first ones.

READ FIRST BEFORE SCROLLING DOWN!!!(Makes it more artistic that way.LOL.)

Umm your right in all regards to the photo above yur. let me say I haden't noticed the trees/green triangle if you will' I kinda like it though it shows a house that is disarray, but yet natural life flourishes and threatens to overtake and consume the man made dwelling. ummm, I also didn't put a heading either. It is actually a picture of what used to be a beutiful house. My focal point was actually meant to be the blackness under the fallen dead palm trees. This was my brothers and my bedroom as a boy I thought the picture I took looked rather interesting and kinda artistic in a dark way. However to show my actual feelings on the subject.

oh and by the way if you look close you will see that that triangle gets bigger. Also if you notice on the ground I thought it rather interesting that this abondoned cat carrier had the words PET TAX poked out in holes.

heres another couple crazy photos I took from another house I lived in as kid, mind you I was a navy brat and got moved around alot so.

This is honey hill the ranch I grew up on.in the back ground used to be my swimming pool, lol.

It's amazing how things in life that are sorefreshing ,fun and new,can so quickly become something, old, a thing that holds only a value of lonliness.

This is a pic of the house that I used to live in on honey hill in alpine sandiego/california.

This is what my house and the property resembled. Buety and nature for as far as my eye could see.

This is what my property as far as my eye could see became.mind you the houses in the distance were never there.it actually used to be a mountain, there were motorcycle tracks all through it.

Now I know some of you might be thinking this isn't art, these are just some photos some guy took of his old stomping grounds...To be quite honest to a small extent thats what they do appear to be. However with a closer look you will see that I tried to take some good photos. As well as show the suffering we all feel when looking back on things lost weather it be our childhood, or our youth. These pics were more pics of an expression I was feeling along with some picturesque landscapes of where I grew up...On a final note I actually have pics of the property on honey hill from when I lived there.Which was when I was three to the age 5, then moved back by at age of seven.

This is your best one. good use of fore, middle, and background. also, there is no mistaking the focal point, and the eye is led around the picture. there is still some tweaking that could be done, but you would need some software to do it.

raddimus

thanks yur...Not sure if I agree. I do see what you see in the picture as far as the uses are concerned however I liked the picture of a pic that I took.I guess I'm kinda biased and like all my pics the same on a certain level. plus for me there is a story and a message that goes along with each picture, that I tried to express briefly in words.I appreciate the critisizm. I'll try and be more aware of the focal.point.I must admit I liked the pic of the tree,as well.Instead of a straiight on pic I took one from an angle facing upwards towards the sky.

Below is a picture of what used to be a bakery on the right...Now a harley davidson shop. To the left was the first bank my parents used to put me on the grid...I have thus so far lived of the grid for about twenty somewad yrs.

Did you see this photo yur this was my fave.and this is the house where the green triangle shows.

I like the fence and I like the tree and its shadow to the left, but really there is not much else going on. I know the idea is to have this stark environment, but there still needs to be things of interest. I think you have too much sky and are cheating yourself out of some good foreground interest. And as I said, I love that shadow cast by the tree. thats contrast. You need that. darks and lights lead the eye around.

what do you think about this crop?

raddimus
04-17-2008, 12:27 AM
yhea i could light it up but I like the dreary feeling,I pursonally like the black of the fence, but on that too that was my child hood home behind the fence thats the one of the broken roof. it looked all dark. secondly I also actually like the way the road rolled then takes a sharp turn.the american flag. and that it was a grave yard in front of my run down home, I thought it was was kinda relevant. as my house was also on it's deathbed and is all dark looking,I like good photos of the sky but some times I'm just in that dark kinda mood. I was happy to see all my old stompping grounds but I was kinda feeling dark and sad as what a state my old homes had become.

04-17-2008, 12:44 AM
actually I think its too light. not too dark. I was trying to cut out some of the brighter sections with the crop to give the illusion of it being darker than it is. also, noticed what I cut out. mostly the sky and some open space to the left. I kept the house, the fence, and the head stones. Illustration is my thing, not photography, but the concept of composition still applies. however, I'm not completely sure I'm pointing you in the right direction with this photo. I would suggest reading some books on composition and cinematography.

Uhhh Sora?? That place looks unsafe for kids to play...
It had been maintained untill it was permanently closen in 1990.
The tower was taken down due to complaints from citizens that they can't stand looking at the symbol of the future (It's the Expo Tower, A symbol of Expo '70) dying miserably.

When I was a kid, it was already worn enough. But those pictures (probably took just before demolition) made me realized "the end of the ('70s) future". I like the view of ghost towns. It's sad, but beautiful, and reminds me of the transience of our civilization.

Interestingly, some artists recycled its parts! :) http://www.yanobe.com/aw/aw_tower_of_life.html

Actually I purposely took what I consider to be artistic pictures.I didn't just post these up and say hey I'll give them a back story.Even if that haden't been my house. In the other photos I actually took two shots if you noticed.I'm capable of taking a fair pic.but I wanted to show a contrast that life tends to take. Not sure if you read what I posted while looking at my pictures, but I didn't just realize these were artistically looking or taken pictures. I know I'm no ansel adams but for an amature I like to think I can take an allright pic.but like you what do I know.:):D

I realize theres such a thing called a long shot even though I don't do photography.. funny how I know a little bit about this and don't really even care.. I'm simply stating that if meteorites were falling.. they wouldn't just all fall in the distance. They don't all just land in the same spot.. unless its Transformers falling from space.. even they didn't land in the same spot.. they all crashed in different places. In the picture the meteorites all appear to crash in the background. The picture is supposed to give off a sense of realism.. not a sense of.. oh yeah.. someone photoshopped a bunch of flames in.. if you feel this has been thrown in your face.. thats your own deal. make it better than.

We get a sense of place and of action. if you want them to land further apart, then why not farther in the background? Also, they could land close together. especially if they were one object that broke up in the atmosphere. also, Trying to make a point of logic by referring to the Transformer movie, isn't really a smart move. how much air time did that M1 Abram get?

Because Transformers wasn't real and although it was very believable, there were things wrong with it. not only that, it also depicted things that we have NEVER witnesses. so yeah, Transformers falling form the sky, could look like that.... but maybe they wouldn't. Personally, i think it's pretty stupid to hit the earth at full speed. Realism aside, I was originally talking about composition.

the windmills are too close together. I like the use of space.

putting your subject matter in the center of the page, hardly ever works. I think if it was moved to the right, this would be a pretty good composition.

Hey, thanks guys, glade you like it. Especially for you Rad. :) Glade your not mad.

The first pick took about an hour to play with, this animated version, 15 hours all in one setting as it is very complex with over 140 layers.
Render's were a bitch!

As for sound fx, well, I do it pro and have many, but my edit software is a lil down, so I have to wait to add them and some music, also, the other problem is, you cant add sound to a GIF, so I wanna you tube it in a few days when I have time to do a sound mix and add another shot at the end.

What you are seeing is actually 48 frames. The original clip was 7 seconds, about 210 frames, when I made this into a GIF in Image Ready, it played back super slow, so I had to speed this up to 1.6 seconds and turn it into a GIF, that way the playback was close to 7 seconds as the GIF's appear to run about 60 frames per second, so I was able to compensate, so even if I could add sound, it would be missing a frame of audio every other frame or so and sound choppy.

So yes, I will add a shot or two at the start and end, (one from space showing Earth and the meteor shower caused by a passing asteroid.) do some sick sound FX from my big library, and splice some tunes into it really soon and pop it on you tube.
The funny thing is, if you save that image and open it up in picture viewer, and enlarge it, it doesn't loose quality too much as that is 1/25th it's real size for faster processing. I cut this thing (animated it) in After Effects 5.5 : ( then made it a GIF in Image Ready. ) If anybody is interested, pm me and I will send you a Video Tutorial link for making GIF's, it's super easy.

EDIT: Any ideas on musical choice? I am thinkin along the lines of Prolouge/65 Million Years Later (Astarabell) from Armageddon's opening scene, but i dunno. Any music ideas???

Oh, I was also toying with the idea of implementing some new shots and making a fake trailer for Micheal Bays 2012 War for Souls, but will probably just do a 60 second short instead. Any ideas on that?

^^^ Now I like THAT pic of Megan, I just hate when they make her too glamorous.

alexsm, I love those soccer photos, great fuckin exposure!! Was that post color timing or is that from the cameras film stock, or the digi camera? I love how the levels are crushed, it looks great. How much image manipulation was done to them? I wanna see more.

And Rad. I like the second set of photo's you posted more then the first, the only advice is to color correct your photos in some kinda photoshop. I think I will add the two pics from the hill together and drop a nuke, I will post that maybe later if thats cool. (I've been wanting to do that for a while, just couldn't find the right photo...

I still dont know how to copy and past previously pasted photos without a photobucket program.

The definition is not good enough because the cam wasn't good enough.

It was a Sony DCR TRV-22 (1 ccd, 800.000px, 10x zoom).
