Paramount Pictures' highly-anticipated Cloverfiled dominated the box office its first day in theaters with an estimated $16.8 million from 3,411 theaters. Made for just $25 million (plus marketing costs), the J.J. Abrams-produced movie will easily beat the all-time 3-day January weekend record held by "Star Wars: Special Edition" ($35.9 million) and the 4-day Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend record held by Black Hawk Down ($33.6 million). Cloverfield's three-day total should come close to $50 million, and the four-day should surpass the $50 million mark.

This just proves that we don't need to be bombarded with all the big action shots, we don't need everything revealed in our trailers. People are not stupid, we don't need all that info to decide whether to see a movie or not!

But ya gotta admit, the marketing of the film sucked you in.

That's some of the backstory actually. And genius really. We can get to the action without boring the audience with backstories. :D

this movie was well worth the hype---I left wanting more resolution, but that was the point of the movie itself so job well done!!

of course it did....it was extremely smart marketing. Whoever marketed this film should be givin a freakin bonus. The lazy way to market is the way Transformers was marketed and any other big tentpole summer flick.
